The Florida/USVI Poison Information Center - Jacksonville is available 24-hours a day, providing emergency telephone resources for the public and healthcare professionals covering 42 Florida counties and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Center receives on average 58,000 calls each year, providing critical assessment, triage and management advice for known or suspected poisonings, as well as answers to poison information questions.
Created by an act of the Florida Legislature in 1989 (FS 395.1027) in response to the overwhelming need for emergency poison information in the State, the Florida/USVI Poison Information Center - Jacksonville is part of the Florida Poison Information Center Network, which incorporates a Statewide Network of poison centers in Jacksonville, Miami, and Tampa.
The Center is located on the campus of UF Health Jacksonville. It is accredited by the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC) as a regional poison center and serves a population of approximately six million people. The Florida/USVI Poison Information Center - Jacksonville is a cooperative effort between the University of Florida College of Medicine, UF Health Jacksonville, the University of Florida Health Science Center - Jacksonville, and Children's Medical Services, State of Florida Department of Health.
Emergency calls are answered 24 hours a day by "specialists in poison information" (SPIs) who are specifically trained nurses or pharmacists with knowledge and access to the latest computerized, comprehensive poison assessment and management techniques. Many of these specialists have emergency medicine or critical care experience, and all are uniquely qualified to assess, triage and manage poison information and exposure calls. The Specialists, who receive unique in-depth training and patient care experience, are required to pass a national examination to be officially designated as a "Certified Specialist in Poison Information" (CSPI) from the AAPCC. Board certified toxicologists are also available 24-hours per day for consultations with the CSPIs/SPIs or other healthcare professionals calling the Center.
The Florida/USVI Poison Information Center - Jacksonville serves as the sole facility in northern Florida for the training of toxicology fellows, medical and pharmacy students, emergency medicine residents, and other healthcare professionals seeking training in clinical/medical toxicology. The Center is part of the State's critical public health surveillance infrastructure monitoring the poisoning and epidemiologic data provided by telephone call data and then automatically uploading critical health data in real-time to both State and national databases. The Center also provides disaster support and surge capabilities for the State's efforts to mitigate major public health events.
In a continual effort to reduce the number of accidental poisonings in the State, the Florida/USVI Poison Information Center - Jacksonville conducts a full spectrum of poison prevention educational programs for the general public and healthcare professional.
